June 2016
These ten quilts have bold graphic designs. They are all reversible because the pieced backs echo the quilt tops. Six quilters have squares and rectangles, Four have large triangles. The triangles have to be cut using templates. Each quilt has instructions for a lap quilt and a single bed quilt. There are charts for cutting and diagrams for assembling quilt tops. The instructions for joining the triangles with bias edges are excellent. These are alternative colour plans and suggestions for quilting designs. The finishing directions are easy to follow and there is a good glossary. An interesting collection of modern designs.
It's books like this that bring quilting up to date. It takes quilting up to a whole new level. The book allows you to learn techniques to be able to make bold graphic quilts that make better use of your time. The quilts within the book are quick to cut and quick to sew together. There are full instructions in the back of the book so that even a beginner quilter like me can make them. The thing I like the most about this book is the palette suggestions at the beginning of each design. Each one has a name and individual colour mix. I sometimes get nervous picking colours and this is ideal for me. It means I can make the quilt to match my decor. Each pattern is split into sections. You have all the details you need to cut the fabric. Then it's onto preparation. Then constructions of the quilt. There are clear and easy to follow illustrations to make the piecing easier for each of the designs. Then it's onto the quilt back and the finishing. There are quilts that are perfect for adults and children alike. Within the instructions at the back of the book are the pictures of the designs for the free motion quilting and the straight-line quilting. This book really does hold everything you need to make some amazing designs of quilts. The designs are magnificent.
This is my kind of quilting, big pieces that fit together in bold designs. Quilts to make in a weekend not once in a lifetime. Subtitled Large-Scale Modern Quilts, there are ten projects that are cut and made up in no time at all. Even beginners can achieve great results with these contemporary designs. Each quilt pattern comes with two sizes and six colourways offering a versatile 120 options. The quilt backs really form part of the design too, taking elements from the front.
Simple yet effective design is always a winner. Theres a basics section at the back of the book. This book has wide appeal and as always with Stash books, it has great layout, is easy to use and the photos are superb. Recommended.
